ATD’s Focus on Safety Saves Our Clients Money

Accidents cost. The detracting effects vary: injuries, project delays, increased corrective-costs, poor morale, not to mention the potential impact to a client’s ongoing workplace and customer base. ATD’s safety program is anchored by two full-time safety staff. Their attention to detail has cultivated a shared approach to ingrained safety practices throughout the company at every level. Making safety a habit has reduced these detracting effects from our jobsites.

We believe every employee has the right to work safely and must be given the tools to achieve this.

How Our Program Works

Everyone is trained in best safety practices! How we work defines our risk level and both impacts and is impacted by other trades around us. We charge each employee to:

  • IDENTIFY: Assess any potential hazards?
  • STRATEGIZE: Employ safe work habits to avoid or reduce risks?
  • PROTECT: Follow your plan and best practices at all times to protect yourself, your team, fellow tradespeople and your client.
  • NO SHORTCUTS: Any time gained by shortcuts is dramatically lost by avoidable accidents!
  • REPEAT: A safety culture is evolved through repetition until it becomes habit!

3 Tips for Managing a Successful Safety Program

1. Consistent Messaging

Leading by example from the top down is the only way to ensure your safety message is respected and followed. At ATD everyone undergoes the same safety training and is held accountable for demonstrating the safest work practices in the field and in the office.

2. Encourage Feedback

Underestimating the potential contribution of any member of your staff limits your ability to see beyond what you already know. So many eyes and ears on different jobsites, subjected to varied surroundings are an invaluable asset to training for new or unforeseen safety hazards. See questions as a sign of your employee’s investment in their job, not just challenges to your authority. If you can’t intelligently quell a concern it probably warrants further investigation.

3. Never Rest – Safety Is an Evolving Endeavor

Today’s safety practices can’t account for every new technological or environmental challenge of tomorrow. Safety training must be revisited with everyone on a consistent basis. This broad spectrum of expectation is what creates a second-nature approach to safety…it’s habit forming.
